Multi thread chain-stitch machine

The sewing machine, to give a multi-thread chain stitch, has a lower looper with sewing needles (7) fitted to a needle shaft (2). A spreader (11) is moved to and from the needle shaft (2) by its carrier shaft (8), to twist an upper thread from the upper side of the seam, for the upper decorative stitches of a normal seam to be passed through. A drive mechanism acts on the spreader (11), synchronised with the needle shaft (2). A coupling is switched to engage and disengage the spreader (11) at its drive.
