NEW MATERIAL:4'-Isopropylbiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid expressed by the formula. USE:A raw material for producing biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid useful as a raw material for polyesters or aramid resins having high heat resistance, elastic modulus and tensile force, etc. PREPARATION:4,4'-Diisopropylbiphenyl is oxidized with molecular O2 in the presence of a cobalt catalyst, e.g. cobalt acetate, etc., and/or manganese catalyst, e.g. manganese acetate, etc. in a <=3C aliphatic monocarboxylic acid solvent, e.g. glacial acetic acid, etc., at 100-240 deg.C under 0.1-8kg/cm<2>-G partial pressure of the O2 to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula. |
