PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 2-substituted cyclopentanone useful as a synthesis intermediate for a perfume material, etc., by reacting an alkyl ester compound of oxocyclopentanecarboxylic acid with a metal alkoxide and thereafter decarbonating the product. SOLUTION: (A) A compound of formula I (R<1> is a lower alkyl; R<2> is an unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one of C≡C or C=C) is reacted with (B) a metal alkoxide of the formula M(OR<3> )n [R<3> is a lower alkyl; M is an alkali(ne earth) metal; (n) is 1 or 2] to provide a compound of formula II (R<4> is a lower alkyl of the R<1> or the R<3> ), and further the compound of formula II is decarbonated to provide the objective compound of formula III in the method for producing the 2-substituted cyclopentanone. By using this method, the process is industrially and advantagneously carried out because the separation and purification steps are not required in the whole reaction process and the objective compound is obtained by using the same reaction apparatus.
