PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display element suitable for display applications requiring display of a large capacity and high contrast by disposing a phase difference plate between one or both polarizing plates and a liquid crystal layer so as to have an effect of lessening the double refraction by one orientation state. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element comprises a liquid crystal layer 30 held between a pair of upper and lower substrates 11, 12 subjected to orientation treatments in such a manner that the inclination of the liquid crystals at the boundary is approximately paralleled at the upper and lower substrates 11, 12, transparent electrodes 21, 22 for impressing voltages on the liquid crystals, a pair of oriented films 31, 32 for orienting the liquid crystals and a pair of polarizing plates 41, 42 and in addition, the phase difference plate 51 which is disposed between the upper substrate and polarizing plate and lessens the double refraction of the liquid crystal layer 30. The phase difference plate 51 for lessening the double refraction by the one orientation state is disposed between one or both of the polarizing plates 41, 42 and the liquid crystal layer 30 in such a manner, by which the nearly complete compensation of the double refraction of the twisted state is made possible and the liquid crystal display element having the extremely excellent contrast is obtd. |
