<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance magnetic characteristics by selecting a non-magnetic substrate with its crystal particle size at surface being a specified value, and thereby controlling the magnetic crystal particle size of a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium consists of anon-magnetic substrate 1, a non-magnetic metal base layer 2, a magnetic layer 3, a protective layer 4 and a lubricative layer 5 laminated in this order. The magnetic crystal particle size of the magnetic layer 3 is controlled by selecting a non-magnetic substrate 1 with its surface crystal particle size being a specified value, or, the magnetic crystal particle size of the magnetic layer 3 is controlled within the range of 5-30nm by selecting a non-magnetic substrate 1 whose average crystal particle size at surface is within the range of 3-28nm. Alternatively, the non-magnetic substrate 1 is made of crystallized glass. The magnetic crystal particle size of the magnetic layer 3 is controlled by providing the base layer 2 between the non-magnetic substrate 1 and the magnetic layer 3 and selecting the thickness of the base layer 2. A magnetic recording medium excellent in magnetic characteristics can thereby be obtained a method for the manufacture thereof can be provided.</p> |
