PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obscure the unequalness in gradation display levels by effectively utilizing the voltage-light transmittance characteristics of smectic liquid crystals of a liquid crystal cell formed by using the smectic liquid crystals. SOLUTION: The inside surface 21a of the glass substrate 21 of an electrode substrate 20 is formed as ruggedness to a corrugated shape along the longitudinal direction of respective transparent conductive films 22. The respective transparent conductive films 22, insulating films 23 and oriented films 24 are, therefore, formed to the rugged shape of the corrugated form meeting the rugged shape of the inside surface 21a of the glass substrate 21. The spacings D between the antiferroelectric liquid crystal 40 side surfaces 24a of the oriented film 24 and the antiferroelectric liquid crystal 40 side surface 15a of the oriented film 15 are varied at a value in a range from the max. value Dmax=1.9μm to the min. value Dmin=1.5μm in the regions of the width(d) of the respective transparent conductive films 13.
