A portable device for temporarily increasing the lifting capacity of an overhead travelling crane includes pillars (3) attached to the crane beam (1) above the rails (8) on which the crane travels. A tensioned rope (5) is secured to anchors (7) at each end of the beam (1) passes over pulley wheels (4) at the top of each pillar (3) and is attached to a stirrup (2) fitted around the beam (1) near to the middle of the span so that the pad (9) of the stirrup (2) applies a vertical upward force to the lower face of the beam.
