A method of measuring periodic arc furnace electrode vibrations involves measuring periodic changes in (a) the electrode current in the 0.1-20 Hz frequency range, (b) the single or multiple derivation of the electrode current with time in the 0.1-20 Hz frequency range and/or (c) an electrical parameter proportional to one of these parameters in the 0.1-20 Hz frequency range. Preferably, the frequency range is 0.1-10 (preferably 1-5, especially 2-4) Hz. Also claimed is a process for active stabilisation of an arc furnace electrode, involving (i) measuring the periodic movements by the above method; and (ii) using the measurement as a regulating signal for axially displacement of the electrode into a position of minimal periodic motion. Further claimed is equipment for carrying out the above method, the equipment including one or more sensors for measuring one of the above parameters; a device for separating the measurement signal in the 0.1-20 Hz frequency range from any other signals and a measurement signal output device.
