A socket fixed to one pipe end has a part-tapering and part-parallel mouth in which a male half with mating external surface is inserted, the two being detachably secured together. A sealing ring in an annular groove acts between the halves. This groove (12) is offset for a distance equal at least to one groove width from the join between the parallel (7,9) and taper (8,13) portions of the sealing face. Pockets or an annular groove (18) accommodating dirt can be provided in the taper portion of the male half (2) or socket (4). Where a union nut (5) is used to secure the male half to the socket, the threads of nut and socket can taper at the same angle and each can have a short parallel threaded portion joining onto its tapering one.
