PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an olefin polymerization catalyst having an improved activity of copolymerizing anα-olefin by mixing a specified transition metal compound with a specified organoaluminum or aluminoxane compound and an ionic compound. SOLUTION: A transition metal compound (A) having a cyclic ligands each of which contains at least two N atoms which are bonded to each other through C-containing saturated bonding chains and at least one of which is bonded to the central transition metal in its skeleton is mixed with an organoaluminum compound represented by the formula (R<1> )a AlZ3-a (wherein R<1> is a 1-20C monovalent hydrocarbon group; Z is H, a halogen or an alkoxyl; and 0<a<=3) or an aluminoxane compound (B) and an ionic compound (C) in such amounts that the A to B molar ratio is 1:(0.01-20,000), the A to C molar ratio is 1:(0.01-20,000) and the B to molar ratio is 1:(0.01-1,000), and the resulting mixture is infiltrated into an inorganic oxide support or an organic support.
