A rare earth metal-nickel-base hydrogen absorbing alloy having a composition represented by the formula: RNiaMnbCocAldXe (wherein R represents a rare earth element including Sc and Y with 95 atomic % or more of R being accounted for by at least one member selected from the group consisting of La, Ce, Pr, and Nd; X represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Cu, Zn, V, and Nb; and a, b, c, d, and e are such that 3.9 ≤ a < 6.0; 0.45 ≤ b < 1.5; 0.01 ≤ c < 0.3; 0.4 ≤ d ≤ 1; 0 ≤ e ≤ 0.2; and 5.2 ≤ a + b + c + d + e ≤ 7.5), the matrix of the alloy having a CaCu5 type structure, a 0.3 to 5 νm Mn-rich second phase being finely dispersed in a percentage area of 0.3 to 7 % in the matrix; a process for preparing the same; and a negative electrode for a nickel-hydrogen rechargeable battery, comprising the above alloy and a conductive agent as the negative electrode material.
|
