The single coil (27) has a straight cross section generally square or rectangular in shape and comprises an insulating resin shell (29) encapsulating an assembly of serial turns (30) formed by a wire conductor (2) with dielectric sheath (3), coiled in layers of longitudinal or radial turns, the number of which is based on the thickness of the sheath (3) such that the voltage between two contiguous turns but most distant electrically does not exceed, for a set input voltage of the coil, a breakdown voltage value (Td) supplied by the application in the air of Paschen's law to the said sheathed conductor. In particular complete windings (38) for air-core transformers can thereby be produced by simply stacking single coils of this type, while retaining air as dielectric medium in the spaces between the turns.
