The vehicle fog light system has a beam width sensor for determining the light capture, and a fog light in the form of a front fog lamp and/or a fog rear lamp, switched on and off by a sensor signal, depending on the visual range. The visual range sensor is arranged at the vehicle with a detection range (1a) aligned upwards. The switching on of a front fog lamp results, if the visual range measured by the visual range sensor is smaller than a specified first threshold value, and greater than a specified second threshold value, which is smaller than the first threshold value.
