The device has a rotary drive element contg. electrical coils (2) circulating in the peripheral direction and for generation of magnetic fields, a driven element and a magnetorheological liquid (1)as the transfer element between the drive element and the driven element. The torque is transferred via transfer plates. The transfer plates of the drive or driven element are of conical form with a defined cone angle in the vicinity of the transfer gap so that the boundary surfaces between the drive iron part (3) and the magnetorheological liquid and the boundary surfaces between the magnetorheological liquid and the driven plates (4)form a V-shaped transfer gap, whereby sections of the boundary surfaces are mutually parallel.
