Polluted ground water treatment assembly installed in well

A water treatment assembly is inserted in a ground well and consists of a basic unit (10) surrounded by an outer sheath (12) enclosing an inner zone in which water is treated by filters (23) or active substances (specifically catalysts for decomposing organic contaminants). The sheath (12) is permeable at one point (18) at which polluted water is admitted to the inner treatment (23) before release through an outlet (21). The novelty is that the chamber in which the active cleaning process takes place is sub-divided into an integral number (n) of chambers (14-16, 50-56). Each chamber is in hydraulic communication with the neighbouring chambers, and water received at the inlet (18) runs through all the chambers before being discharged at the outlet (21). Each chamber has a cartridge forming a part of the water treatment process. Exhausted cartridges are removed from above and replaced by one with full treatment capacity.
