In protecting metal-surfaced articles in closed transport containers by enriching the residual gas in the container with vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI), the VCI is incorporated in the container after closure by thermal evaporation of solid and/or liquid VCI, spraying VCI and/or abstraction of the local gas phase near a VCI reservoir. Further VCI is delivered into the gas if the vapor phase VCI concentration falls below a predetermined value and/or after a predetermined time.
