The method involves identifying rear collision by evaluating accident-relevant measure and estimating collision time of the rear collision. Components of passenger protective systems (60, 70) are parameterized and/or adjusted before estimating the time and/or after the identified rear collision. One of the systems (60) is activated before the estimated time of the collision and/or after the identified rear collision, and the other system (70) is activated after identifying a front collision and/or a side collision. An independent claim is also included for a device for activating a passenger protective system in a vehicle.
