A method of treating exhaust gases containing a halogen based compound characterized by contacting exhaust gases, which contain a halogen based compound such as a halogen gas and/or a halogenated hydrogen gas (halogenated acid gas), with a simple metal. It is possible to effectively remove a halogen based compound such as acid gas and halogen gas from the exhaust gases.
