A plurality of rows (13A, 13B)of sensors in each of which a plurality of distance variation measuring sensors (12) comprising a light emitter (15) and a light receiver (16) are arranged in the orthogonal direction to the direction in which human bodies (8) pass are provided on a ceiling (5). The number of passers is detected on the basis of the number of the sensors for measuring variation in distance which have detected a human body.
