Prepn. of propan-1,2-diol (I) comprises catalytic hydrogenation of glycerol at elevated temp. and pressure. Glycerol contg. up to 20 wt.% water and a catalyst (II) are used. (II) contains 40-70 wt.% Co, 10-20 wt.% Cu, 0-10 wt.% Mn and 0-10 wt.% Mo and opt. up to 10 wt.% inorg. polyacid and/or heteropolyacid. |
