The water-soluble copper phthalocyanine dyes of formula (I) are new where CuPc = a copper phthalocyanine group; X = 2-6 carbon (C) alkylene, Y = 1-6 C alkylene, optionally substituted by hydroxyl (OH), carboxyl or amino; R<1>, R<2>, R<4> = hydrogen (H) or 1-4 C alkyl; R<3> = H or 1-4 C alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aminoalkyl; M = a monovalent cation or one equivalent of a polyvalent cation; a, b = 1 or 2; c = 0 or 1; a + b + c = 3 or 4.
