PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new substance useful as a therapeutic agent for cancers, showing strongly proliferation inhibitory effects on mouse and human tumor cells, by culturing a bacterium belonging to the genus Actinoplanes, capable of producing an antitumor substance BE-56,980. SOLUTION: This new antitumor substance BE-56,980 (salt) is shown by the formula (R is H or a lower alkyl) and is useful as a therapeutic agent for cancers in the field of medicines since it shows strongly proliferation inhibitory effects on mouse and human tumor cells. The new antitumor substance is obtained by culturing a bacterium [e.g. Actinoplanes sp. A569,870 (FERM P-15,716)] belonging to the genus Actinoplanes, capable of producing an antitumor substance BE-56,980, collecting the culture product from the culture solution and the cells and optionally converting the product into a pharmacologically permissible salt. |
