PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element for inexpensive costs which has a light background of an achromatic color and a wide range of viewing angles. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element holds a liquid crystal composition between a first substrate 1' and a second substrate 1, and has a liquid crystal cell 5 which displays by a double refraction effect based on twist orientation. In this case, an optical delay plate 11, which has a first optical axis on the side of the first substrate 1' and has a second optical axis on the first polarizing plate 4, is placed between the first substrate 1' and a first polarizing plate 4. And, when an acute angle of those formed by the first and second optical axes is defined as a twist angle between the optical delay plates, a twisted direction from the second optical axis to the first optical axis is set to a same direction as the twist orientation from the first substrate 1' to the second substrate 1 so as to vanish the unwanted double refraction effect. |
