PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal vapor discharge lap, having a less lamp voltage change and a stable life characteristic, by making the equilibrium reaction of sealed metal, in lighting an electrode tip part, and constantly retaining the vapor pressure of metal halide in lighting. SOLUTION: In a metal vapor discharge lamp arranging electrodes 2 and 2 composed of tungsten in both the ends of a quartz-made light emitting tube 1, and consisting of sealing merdury, a rare gas, and halogen, and at least one kind or more metal from a group of iron, cobalt, and nickel as luminous material in a light emitting tube; the quantity of sealed metal other than mercury is set A×D×V+B where (A: the inverse of valence of the enclosed metal, D: a density of the sealed halogen of 1×10<-5> -1×10<-8> mol/cm<3> , V: the inner value cm<3> of the light emitting tube, and B: a constant of 0.7×10<-4> -3.6×10<-4> mol), to constitute a discharging lamp.
