PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has a lubricating layer exhibiting a good lubrication effect over a long period of time and has an excellent traveling property, wear resistance, durability, etc., and more particularly still characteristics and shuttle characteristics. SOLUTION: This recording medium is constituted by forming a magnetic layer 2 and further, the lubricating layer 3 consisting of a lubricant on a nonmagnetic base 1 or by forming the magnetic layer 2a contg. the lubricant on this nonmagnetic base 1. In such a case, a fluorine lubricant is used as the lubricant. The value of Z defined by Z='Ablank'/A where, A is defined as the integrated intensity of the atomic spectra of the main components of the magnetic layer and 'Ablank' is defined as the integrated intensity of the atomic spectra of the main components of the magnetic layer obtd. when the magnetic layer on which the lubricating layer is not formed or the magnetic layer from which the lubricant within at least 10nm from the surface is removed is subjected to an X-ray photoelectron spectrochemical analysis} when the magnetic recording medium is subjected to the measurement of the X-ray photoelectron spectrochemical analysis from the magnetic layer 2 (2a) side thereof is specified to 1.15 to 4.50. |
