A character input method of a portable terminal having a touch screen and a device thereof are provided to enable the portable terminal for displaying plural key images on a touch screen unit to select and receive an image regardless of a border part of the image, thereby exactly receiving the image selected by a user even on a small-sized touch screen. If symbol inputting is requested by a user, a symbol display area, a key image data display area, and a touch sensing area are set(601). One of key image data prestored in the key image data display area is outputted(603). Touch data generated according to the user's touch in the touch sensing area is analyzed. If the analyzed results refer to alteration of the key image data, a random one of the key image data is searched and outputted. If the analyzed results refer to outputting of a symbol image, symbol data corresponding to one symbol image of at least more than one of symbol images included in the outputted key image data is searched and outputted to the symbol display area(605-611).
