PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transfer a toner image at the highest transfer efficiency while keeping defect in an image minimum by transferring the toner image to a receiver sheet from an intermediate transfer member by the working of an electric field for transferring toner grains from the intermediate transfer member. SOLUTION: The toner image is transferred to the intermediate transfer member such as an intermediate transfer roller 42 from a first image member 21 at a transfer station consisting of a roller 28. The first image member 21 is cleaned at a cleaning station 49 and used again for forming another different color toner image through the use of toner stations 35-38. The toner image is transferred to the intermediate transfer roller 42 from the first image member 21 in accordance with the electric field applied between the core of the roller 42 and a conductive electrode forming a pair of the first image member 21. A multicolor toner image is transferred to the receiver sheet at a transfer station 51 in accordance with the electric field generated between a backing roller 56 and the transfer roller 42.
