摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently decompose nitrogen oxide in introduced gas even if a large quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide are contained in an atmosphere by providing an oxidizing means oxidizing nitrogen monoxide to nitrogen dioxide in a nitrogen oxide decomposing apparatus. SOLUTION: A catalyst 7 as an oxidizing means obtained by molding a porous Pt powder into a pellet shape is arranged in the vicinity of a cathode 6 and, when mixed gas of a large quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide and a very small amt. of NOx is introduced, NO in NOx within introduced gas is oxidized to NO2 by the catalyst 7. This NO2 and NO2 originally contained in the introduced gas are adsorbed on the surface of the cathode 6 to be dissociated into a nitrogen atom and an oxygen atom and the nitrogen atom is discharged as nitrogen gas from the cathode 6 by the voltage applied across an anode 2 and the cathode 6 and the oxygen atom is discharged as oxygen gas on the anode 2 by moving the oxygen atom through a solid electrolyte as oxygen ions. By this constitution, even in an atmosphere containing a large quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide, NOx can be efficiently decomposed.
