DISCHARGE LAMP LIGHTING DEVICE DRIVEN BY INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which is driven by an internal combustion engine and can light a high pressure discharge lamp without using a ballast constituted of a magnetic leakage voltage transformer. SOLUTION: A pulse generating circuit 13 to generate high voltage pulse using a generator 11 driven by an internal combustion engine as an electric source is installed and the high voltage pulses generated by the pulse generating circuit are applied to the discharge lamp 12 while being overlapped to the output voltage of the generator 11. A capacitor 14 is connected with output terminals of the generator 11 to bypass high voltage pulses. The short circuit current of the generator is so set as to make the output voltage vs. output current characteristic be a drooping characteristic and as to limit the discharge current immediate after starting discharge of the discharge lamp 12 to be an allowable value or lower. The output voltage vs. output current characteristic of the generator 11 is so set as to keep the terminal voltage and the discharge current at the normal time of the discharge lamp within rated ranges.
