A process is claimed for the preparation of amines of formula A-R-N(R1)-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2O-R2: -R = 6 - 32C hydrocarbon chain (optionally unsaturated); -R1 = 1 - 22C hydrocarbon chain (optionally unsaturated) or -CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-O-R2 ; A = H or -N(R1)-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-O-R2; -R2 = a motif or chain of motifs of formula -CH2-CH(O)-CH2-O- (I) and/or -CH2(CH2-O-)-CH2-O- (II); in which the available valence of the O atom is linked to a H atom; in which (a) an amine of formula A-R-N(H)-R3 is reacted with an ether of formula (A); R3 = H or 1 - 22C hydrocarbon chain (optionally unsaturated); A, R1and R2 are as above, and the available O valency being linked to a protective group, and (b) deprotection.
