PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for characterizing a polymer binder for the electrode of an electrochemical battery having a current collector, an electrochemically active material, and a paste containing the binder. SOLUTION: The expansion factorλof a binder as to an active material is calculated from the measurements of the angles of contact between a standard solution and the active material and between the standard solution and the binder. The energy IEL of interaction between the binder and the electrolyte is calculated form the measurement of the angle of contact between the electrolyte and the binder. The binder is selected so that theλis less than 0, and that the IEL is equal to at least 60mJ/m<2> .
