The grinding unit has a grinding spindle holder that is adapted to be mounted on a base. At least one grinding spindle that has a grinding wheel is secured to the grinding spindle holder. A carriage is movable on guides on the grinding spindle holder. A workpiece holder is movable on guides on the carriage transverse to the direction of movement of the carriage. A protective housing is secured to the carriage and extends closely around the workpiece holder and the grinding wheel.
