PURPOSE:To protect the surfaces of anode and cathode against damage caused by irradiation with laser beam. CONSTITUTION:A metal mesh 8 disposed in the small hole 4a of a cathode 4 is irradiated with a laser beam 2 from a laser unit 1 to emit photoelectrons which ionize gas molecules between the cathode 4 and an anode 5 thus triggering discharge therebetween. Since the laser beam is not focused directly on the surface of anode or cathode, the surface thereof are not damaged thus producing discharge efficiently. |
