PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a utilization factor of light by utilizing both components of p- and s-polarized light from a natural source of light in a single plate type projection color liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: White natural light from a source of light is separated into each color of R, G, B by a polarized light separation color resolving element 103, and p-polarized light is transmitted through and s-polarized light is reflected. The transmitted p-polarized light is s-polarized through a phase plate 105, and is separated into each color of R, G, B through a polarized light separation color resolving element 104 and further the s-polarized light is reflected. The whole light from the source of light is separated and resolved into R, G, B of s-polarized light, and since picture elements corresponding to those formed on liquid display elements 107 are transmitted before they are magnified and projected through a projection lens 110 onto a screen 111, a utilization factor of the light is high and a bright projected picture is obtained. |
