PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the change of tape traveling property caused by the long term preservation or under a severe environment of high temp. and high humidity while keeping excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristic in a coating type high density magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is prevented substantially from increasing fine protrusions having >=30nm height on the surface after 7 days preservation under the environment of 60 deg.C and 90% RH by providing an under coating layer containing mainly an inorganic powder and a binder on a non-magnetic supporting body, providing one or more layers of a magnetic layer containing at least a ferromagnetic metallic powder and a binder on the under coating layer, controlling the thickness of the magnetic layer to >=0.05μm to <=0.5μm and the surface roughness of the outermost layer of the magnetic layer to <=3nm and containing a fatty acid in the under coating layer.
