PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the precision of the grinding position of a medium facing surface by providing a four-probe type resistor as a reference resistor correcting an electric lap monitor resistor in the vicinity of a thin film magnetic head element. SOLUTION: When a current I is made to flow between terminals 20a and 20b of this four-probe type reference resistor 3, the specific resistance of a resistor 21 is expressed by an expression I if a voltage between the terminals 20c and 20d is meant by E. Here, the distance between probes, the film thickness of a resistor 19 and the peculiar constant based on the principle of the four- probe method (0.72 in the case of cgs system of units) are respectively meant by (s), (d) and F. Here, the value of the ratioρ1 (specific resistance of the resistor 19)/d is needed, the expression I is changed into an expression II, and the left sideρ1 /d of the expression II becomes the reference value. On the other hand, when the pattern width of the resistor of the electric lap monitor at the time of grinding the medium facing surface up to a desired position is meant by h4 , w4 , the resistant value R1 between terminals at this time is obtained by an expression III. Therefore, when the resistant value becomes R1 , grinding is finished.
