The mechanism holds the sheet material (31) inside a cold forming press during moulding, during which some parts of the material move as it is pressed against a die by hydraulic pressure applied via an elastic membrane (4) on one side of the material. A first device (18) is used to generate a hydraulic pressure for holding the material in place and a cylinder arrangement (15,16,17a) transmits this pressure to a piston (14) and also maintains the pressure. The piston is designed to urge a part of the material against a retainer (13) while the hydraulic pressure is maintained. A valve (20) is also provided which is directly affected by the moulding pressure and reduces the pressure applied to the material to hold it in place once the moulding pressure reaches a pre-determined level.
