<p>A light source (28) governed by an intensity controller (38) supplies illumination to an endoscope (22) by a fiber optic cable (46), including two insulated conductors (62). By attaching the cable (46) to the light post (58) of the endoscope (22) the conductors (62) are shorted together, and this circuit completion state is monitored by the intensity controller (38). When the cable is disconnected from the light post (58) this state is recognized by the intensity controller (38) and the light source (22) is automatically placed in a standby mode reducing the amount of emitted light energy, thus minimizing heating of the fiber optic cable (46).</p> |
