The printer has printing plates (13) clamped in a channel (14) on the plate cylinders (8), and each are dampened and or inked by friction-driven applicator rollers (12). The periphery of the damping-agent applicator roller (12) is approximately half the print length. The diameter of the damping agent applicator roller is in a ratio of 1 to n+0.5 to the diameter of the plate cylinder. In the rotary direction of the plate cylinder, the ink-applicator roller (15) following the damping agent applicator roller (12) possesses the diameter of the damping agent applicator roller. The subsequent ink-applicator rollers (16,17) have larger diameter deviations.
