<p>A mattress (10) intended for use in hospital facilities having replaceable and interchangeable parts is disclosed. The mattress (10) has an upper layer in the form of a futon (36), and has a base (21) made of a first layer of a first foam material, a second layer of a second foam material which is more dense than the first foam material. In the one embodiment of the invention, the futon (36) is removably attached to one of the foam layers by a hook and loop fastener (58, 60). A water and moisture impervious cover (12) having an upper portion and a lower portion joined together by a zipper (14, 16) around the periphery of the two portions, serves to cover the futon (36) and base (21) of the mattress (10).</p> |
