The appliance consists of a power unit (4) for applying a bending force of specific value at a point (6) on the mast (1). The point at which this bending force is applied is a height above the ground (3) and a displacement sensor (17) is provided at a position higher than the point of application. The power unit consists of means of applying tension to the point of application braced against the mast at a lower pressure point (11) close to the ground and an upper pressure point (10) above the point of application by two arms (8,9). The displacement sensor indicate any deflection of the mast after the tension is removed
