<p>An automated gearbox, in series with an engine and clutch in a vehicle power train having, is shifted by means of two driving units, in the form of electric motors 103, 104. Motor 104 rotates a shaft 102 through worm gearing 121, 122 and spur gearing 123, 125 to move the gearbox ratio selector into position such that the desired gear can then be engaged by rotation of shaft 101, driven by motor 103 through worm gearing 107, 108 and spur gearing 110, 111a. The spur gearing can be replaced by other gearing, the axes of the electric motors can be orthogonal rather than parallel and a single shaft can be rotated and moved axially by the motors to effect the two stages of shifting. Within the housing containing the motors is a monitoring arrangement which has a Hall effect sensor and magnetic poles arranged on discs which are relatively rotatable against springs.</p> |
