Preparation of compounds by mixing and extrusion

An extruder includes a filler feed station (6) upstream of a binder feed station (4). The filler can be pretreated (7,8) prior to introduction of the binder into the extruder. Also disclosed is a method of producing a compound which incorporates recycled material. The filler may be fibres such as wheat or flax straw or thermoset plastics material.
