Moving object detection in a coded moving picture signal

A system for detecting a moving object in a motion vector coded picture signal and highlighting the area of movement on a display involves detecting information b comprising i) the coding mode of the frame (eg Intra, Bi-directional or Predictive), ii) the motion compensation mode of the block and iii) motion vector information, and directing the information b to a moving object detection processor 8. The processor 8 includes (Figure 4) an adaptive detection scheme detector (81) which identifies the type of motion compensation for each block and determines which of five processes is to be followed. If the block is intra-coded (ie without a motion vector), a moving object detection predictor (82) determines motion by investigation of the information in a spatio-temporally adjacent block. If the block is inter-coded, a basic moving object detector (83) determines the size of the motion vector(s) as an indication of motion in the block. The signal e output from the moving object detection processor 8 is an indication of motion in the block and is added to a decoded image signal by image processor 5 and output to display 10 (Figure 13). Moving parts of the image are brightened or shown in a specified colour.
