PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress shift hunting and smoothly control shift by conducting the up-shift of a transmission in such a condition that a traveling resistance estimate after down-shift becomes a value or less obtained by subtracting the prescribed value from a traveling resistance estimate before down-shift. SOLUTION: When the absolute value of a traveling resistance estimate in down-shift is smaller than a learning value and this state continues for the prescribed time, up-shift is forced to conduct. A traveling resistance estimate when actual vehicle-speed drops 1km/h from the target speed is learned, and when actual vehicle-speed further drops 3km/h from the target speed, down-shift is conducted. Even when the absolute value of a traveling resistance estimate after down-shift does not become (a learning value-traveling resistance equivalent to 2% gradient) or less, when the absolute value of the traveling resistance estimate in down-shift is smaller than the absolute value of the learning value and this state continues for the prescribed time (in the example, for 16sec.), up-shift is forced to conduct.
