PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a steel cord for reinforcing a rubber article capable of improving the stability of a twist and the penetrating property of an elastic material such as a rubber, also reducing the change in an outer diameter of the cord and the elongation of the cord for improving the uniformity of the tire, and a pneumatic tire. SOLUTION: This steel cord for reinforcing a rubber article is obtained by forming a steel cord 10 having 1×4 structure formed by twisting 0.10-0.4mm steel filaments 10A, B, C and 12 in a range of 15-100D twisting pitch, and treating the steel filament 12 for forming a pattern alternately having a straight part 14 and a bending part 16. By this way, the twists of the cord are stabilized, the elongation of the cord can be reduced, and since the penetration of the rubber is good, the generation of a rust can be reduced. By using the steel cord 10 for a carcass or a belt of a pneumatic tire, a uniformity, a steering stability and an endurance thereof can be improved.
