PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject antibiotics exhibiting excellent antibacterial activities against gram-positive bacteria and other multiple medicine-resistant bacterial, low in toxicity, and useful as excellent antibacterial agents. SOLUTION: Compounds of formula I (R is a group of formula II for tetromycin C1, a group of formula III for tetromycin C2, etc.) or their salts. The tetromycin C1 has the following natures. Appearance: colorless acicular crystal; molecular formula: C50 H64 O14 ; melting point: 190-193 deg.C; specific rotation: [α]D<25> =-26.0 deg. (c 0.53 in acetone), etc. The compound of formula I is obtained by culturing a fungus belonging to the genus Streptomyces and capable of producing the compound of formula I [preferably Streptomyces SP-MK 67-CF9 (FFRM P-14609), etc.] in a culture medium, and subsequently collecting the compound of formula I from the culture product. The producing fungus is preferably inoculated in a nutritive culture medium and subsequently aerobically subjected to a shaking culture at approximately 25 deg.C. The component of formula I is collected e.g. by an extraction method using water and a miscible solvent, a gel filtration method, etc. |
