PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hydrolyze a hydrolyzable plastic such as polyurethane or polyurethane urea into its starting materials without increasing the throughput at a slight expense in terms of energy, equipment and starting materials. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a method for tydrolyzing a plastic having hydrolyzable chemical bonds (groups) in the polymer chain by treating the plastic with water at 20-240 deg.C optionally under pressure in the presence of the hydrolyzate of a plastic which is the same as or similar to the plastic to be hydrolyzed until the plastic to be hydrolyzed is completely dissolved in the hydrolysis reaction mixture.
