A top shoot protector 1 is described. The top shoot protector 1 comprises a protective stake 3, which runs parallel with and along a stem 2. The top shoot 5 of the stem 2 is to be protected against biting or breaking off. This is achieved in that the upper end of the protective stake 3 extends upwards past the top shoot 5. The protective stake 3 is fastened by means of clips 4. Each clip has a first and second U-shaped profile 9, 14, which are designed for sprung snap engagement around the protective stake 3 and the stem 2 respectively. The protective stake 3 is of small dimensions and will therefore not adversely affect the light reaching the needles 8 of the tree or of the actual top shoot itself. Since the protective stake 3 is thin, birds will not endeavour to perch on this, but will instead seek another place to land. The protective stake furthermore prevents biting off of the top shoot, since the upper part of the protective stake runs along the top shoot. <IMAGE>
