A sprinkler apparatus for extinguishing fires which comprises a frame for connection to a source of fire-extinguishing fluid and which has a passage via which said fluid can flow along a road. Normally, the passage is blocked off by a closure in contact with the fluid. The closure is maintained in its position of blocking off the passage by means of an elastic retention device or spring which is held in said position by means of a heat-sensitive, flattenable prop so that it rests on the closure. When the ambient temperature rises to a preset level, the prop is flattened, which allows the automatic expulsion of the passage closure and the flow of fire-extinguishing fluid through said passage. The closure is formed from a material which is a poor conductor of heat, thereby avoiding freezing of the flattenable prop through the transfer of heat from said prop, through the closure, to the extinguishing fluid of the passage. <IMAGE>
